Tina Turner Dies at 83
The legendary American singer, songwriter, actress, and rock star Tina Turner died at her home in Switzerland today. She sold over 200 million records worldwide in her dazzling career. Tina Turner was an eight-time Grammy Award winner, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She first rose to fame in the early 1960s appearing with her then-husband Ike Turner performing classic songs like Proud Mary. Her career spanned the Motown sound era and after she broke up with her husband, she embarked on an extremely successful solo career.
She sang a duet with Janis Joplin when she saw her in the audience when Tina was opening for the Rolling Stones in 1969 at a concert. But perhaps some of her most famous collaborations were with the Rolling Stones and Mick Jagger, who she reportedly taught to dance backstage at one of their joint gigs. Turner and Jagger shared a stage as early as 1966. She opened up for the Stones on several tours over the years and sang with both Mick and Keith Richards. In fact, Tina collaborated on songs with some of the most famous rockers of all time.
