Your Way Out of a Problem

You Can’t Always Think Your Way Out of a Problem

Times weren’t always easy growing up, but I distinctly remember moments that brought me tremendous joy. One example was waking up to find that, overnight, the world had transitioned from fall to winter. This happened every year but it never got old.I’d awaken to a landscape that had been completely transformed by a perfect blanket of sparkling, unblemished snow. The new fallen flakes collected both on the branches and on the ground, and in the soft light of morning the frozen crystals twinkled like a billion galaxies.I wouldn’t run straight out to play. Instead, I stayed very still to celebrate the feeling. Instinctively, I tried to bottle that feeling up to keep on the shelf in preparation for the inevitable dreary day.I permitted myself to get lost in a feeling of pure wonder. I bathed in it. In those moments, every other trouble in my life ceased to exist.Give Yourself Permission by Courtney McDermott made me think about that and other times of spontaneous happiness. Every now and then sometimes you feel an overwhelming satisfaction just to be alive.Perhaps for most of my life I’ve been too obsessed with conscious thought. Most of our schooling emphasizes intellectual knowledge at the expense of emotional knowledge. However, when I look back at my choices, I recognize that I’ve often deferred to pure instinct when it came time to cast the final vote.
