Stepping Into Online Tutoring: One Teacher’s Journey Into the World of Virtual Education

Meet Alex, a high school math teacher who decided to start tutoring students online after school hours for some extra income. We sat down with Alex to discuss the ups and downs of shifting to virtual tutoring. “When the school year ended last spring, I suddenly had a lot more free time without papers to grade every night. I saw an ad for a tutoring company that had switched to online sessions due to COVID. I applied on a whim, figuring it could be an easy side gig. Boy, was I underestimating what I was getting myself into!”Alex shares the curveballs that came with tutoring students remotely, like keeping shy kids engaged on video calls and dealing with some nightmarish parents. However, the flexibility of setting her own schedule and forming meaningful connections with students kept Alex intrigued. “By my third month of tutoring online, I really hit my stride. I developed strategies to make sessions really interactive and fun for the students. While not without its challenges, the experience gave Alex invaluable insight into the world of virtual education. She plans to incorporate more of the tech tools and engaging techniques into her in-person teaching. “Tutoring online stretched me in so many unexpected ways. My communication and lesson-planning skills grew exponentially. And I got exposed to so many different learning styles and curriculum approaches. Even just 6 months in, I feel like a far more well-rounded teacher.” Alex’s biggest advice for prospective online tutors?
