Jerry Roberts Gives Speech At SBCC
Last Thursday, an astonishing journalist and executive editor of the Santa Barbara News-Press gave a speech to rising journalists at SBCC.Jerry Roberts’s speech revealed hardships and entertaining stories that he encountered throughout his career. Joshua Molina, professor of journalism and staff writer for the NoozHawk presented his students with this amazing opportunity on September 28, 2023. Molinas’ students left with a highly motivational mindset on journalism.Harvard graduate, Roberts had no idea what he was going to do in life.Back in San Francisco he studied journalism and started an unpaid internship at a weekly news press, after two months he got paid fifty dollars each week. Despite not getting paid a high salary he loved what he did.Roberts covered many stories in the weekly paper, learned how to get faster at writing, and built a portfolio with stories that he called “Clips”. The clips Roberts had is what got him hired at the San Francisco Chronicle. The San Francisco Chronicle is where Roberts’s career was solidified, he began as a general assignment reporter and worked his way up to managing editor.After a long 25 years at the San Francisco Chronicle, Roberts made his way to Santa Barbara in 2002 where he has continued to figure out ways to reinvent himself as a journalist. His speech ended with a brief questionnaire segment where Molinas’ students’ got the chance to speak to him.One student’s last question was “What advice would you give to new journalists?”He was farewelled with students clapping and thanking him for joining the class.
