31 Things I’ve Learned in 31 Years, the Hard Way — part 1

Everyone makes a big fuss about turning 30. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great birthday and an even better year, but there’s just something magical in the air coming into my 31st.I’ve spent a little more time reflecting this year — having a toddler will do that to you. And although I’m fighting imposter syndrome as I’m typing this — what would a mere 30-year-old have to say that contributes value?— I actually feel that I have some insights to share with the world. Even if they’re simple. Every story is important, as is every perspective, but I’ve been afraid to write or share stories for some time. I’m using this month, my birthday month, to give myself that push.To be honest, I made excuses not to write tonight. But I got a text from my mom saying one of my childhood friends died from cancer today. She had been battling it for years, and although we weren’t too close throughout our adult lives, I had followed her journey. She shared her story without fear, and she kept her light the entire time, never faltering or losing her faith. I wondered how a young girl who was constantly in pain kept her spirit. She laughed, made jokes and was often sharing stories of how she connected with those around her. She wasn’t afraid, and I’m hoping I can have even an ounce of her bravery. She didn’t get the chance to grow old, to pursue her passions. I’m not going to squander mine.So here we go. Here’s the start to 31 things I’ve learned in 31 years. They are personal to me — I’ve grown, but I’m not ‘there’ yet. I hope it leads you to some reflection, too, no matter where you are in life.
