The Ignition

The ignition begins as a pilot light is lit inside the beast’s chest. As the timer counts down, the system checks start in preparation for the explosives deployment. Ten fingers extend and begin their habitual tapping, counting each fingertip and ensuring full motion and response. Nine different scenarios play out in the mind’s eye, developing the best course of attack. Eight seconds is how long each breathing cycle takes as the beast attempts to stay calm long enough to choose a flight path. Seven steps are taken in the pacing pattern as the engines begin warming up in continued preparations. Six different methods of murderous intent are settled upon as the beast continues pacing. Five guttural sounds sputter out as the engines are revved, warming the housing and preparing for lift-off. Four scenarios are settled upon as the machinations begin to fall into place. Three times, forgiveness is considered but immediately overridden by the excitement of the launch. Two entities now become one as the “dark side” no longer has to convince the beast of action, they are walking in step. One last deep breath is taken before ignition, adding as much fuel to the tanks as possible. In an instant, the engines explode simultaneously, leaving clouds of smoke and smoldering earth in the wake. From the command center, we can see the rippling across the beast’s face as the sure speed of flight pings him to his chair as he struggles to maintain consciousness. A tear develops in each eye, streaming across his face as his body begins to panic. Determined eyes stop the leak with a deliberate squinching of the face. The beast’s chest rises, refilling the tank to continue his trajectory. As his mouth opens wide, a visceral scream comes booming out. The shaking of the hull knocks loose the watchman, causing command to lose sight of the best momentarily.
