Believe in You

Believe in You. And What You Can Do.

How many times do we step forward when we are unsure whether we can do something or not? Often, we shy away from challenging tasks when we are unsure of our ability to accomplish them. Opportunities may slip through our fingers because we are unsure of what may happen. We doubt our abilities because of some past poor performance. Or the anticipated possibility that has not yet manifested itself. This gets worse as we get older. Experience is often the enemy of exploration. When we are younger, we are fearless and sometimes brainless. As we age, and have more experience, we get more conservative. That is not a political designation but an observation. When we have more at risk, we become more risk averse. We like simple, comfortable, predictable, and safe. The idea of charging off and trying something new creates a whole new set of headaches. They are ones we would rather not have in our lane.

I ask you to consider those great wins you have experienced. Especially those ones early in your career, when you didn’t play it so safe. When you were fired up with enthusiasm, you often charged off to slay the dragon without a sword. While the first steps may have been frightening, the end result was often spectacular. All because you didn’t let your fears get in the way of the experience. As you became more skilled, and more time has passed, your sense of adventure has waned. It puts you outside your comfort zone. It sounds like work to try something new. We leave that to the younger people. We experienced sellers will stick to safe and predictable outcomes. But as we get more conservative in our actions, the world is changing around us. We cannot rely on business as usual to drive the success bus. We must get ready for business as unusual to flourish in the future.
