A Better Schedule
For a normal week at SJND, having school Monday to Friday is the norm. But what if we had no school on Wednesday and school on Saturday instead? This change may be substantial, so let’s look at the benefits. Dividing the weekdays in two pieces is a lot less tiring because there are more breaks so there is no looming 5 days of work ahead. Plus, most people work on Wednesday, so going out is more fun and the lines are shorter. Specifically, having 2–3 day work weeks really helps because there is less back-to-back work; therefore, the work day feels more relaxed. Some may say having a shorter weekend means you never really get a break because all you get is one-day breaks and that’s not enough to “recharge,” but I firmly believe that the more frequent breaks make it exceedingly better. Conversely, if we chose to do the opposite, and combine the current weekdays and weekends, (essentially stretching out the school week throughout several weeks) we would, for example, work for a month, then have two weeks off. In this instance, we probably would want to include multiple breaks. Relative to this longer scenario, our current situation would be an improvement. Likewise, this new schedule would be the same.Alternatively, we could get rid of school on Wednesday altogether. This may not be very plausible nor probable because of how much students would be behind at the end of the year, but studies do say that having a 4-day workweek improves mental health. Unfortunately, to make up for lost instruction, the school times would have to change the hours of instruction per day and/or the learning would be more rushed, complicating the schedule considerably more.
