Write Passionately, Edit Rationally
When I started writing online. I never edited my work. I published it as is. Back then, I thought it was pretty good. A year later, as I reread my old writings, I feel like slapping myself in the face. What I considered good writing was poor writing. Every area could be improved.
The core of the message: good, but the form: weak.
It was a philosophical mistake. I was naive to think that writing from the heart would be enough. That was only one (small) part of the equation.
A few key moments in my career have taken me to the next level. “I need to spend more time editing my work” was one of them.
Before I elaborate: there’s no one way of working. There are writers who manage to write fantastic first drafts, others who will need several rounds of editing. Everyone will find the process that suits their style and needs.
