Why Lord of the Rings is the Greatest Love Story of the Age

Two Christmases ago, I called up my brother to wish him a happy holiday. As we hung up, I accidentally said ‘I love you.’. It was a Freudian slip, one of those things you say without thinking.

There was a long, awkward pause as he, clearly stunned, didn’t know what to say, and I, realizing I’d stumbled into no-man’s land, was likewise tongue-tied.

Now, my brother and I are close. We are only two years apart. After our parents divorced, we leaned on each other by necessity. We were both the best man at the other’s wedding. I’m the godfather of his three kids.

And yet I had never said those words to him before. Not once in forty years.

The older I get, the more I realize that words are cheap (a troubling thought for someone who trades in them). Actions are important, yes. But when it comes to dialogue, it’s usually what’s not said that speaks loudest.
